PENNY
FOR YOUR THOUGHTS
Hi
All, as mentioned in a prior newsletter, MBC is setting up ACH (Automated
Clearing House) which would allow you to provide your tithes, gifts and
offering by automatically deducting this from a checking or
savings. Forms will be available during the month of September for
those of you that which to use this program. I know several of you
that pay all of your bills on line and have told me that this is
perfect. This is definitely a preference and please be assured that
we are not doing away with the trusty check/cash system. The forms
will be available at the information center shortly. If you have
any question, please call Penny at the church office. (You can
change or cancel your ACH at anytime.)

Jana's Jovial Jokes

FISHING HUMOR:
Dylan and Charlie are talking about fishing. Charlie
says emphatically, 'I am never going to take my wife fishing with me ever
again, Dylan!'
'That bad, eh?' enquires Dylan smiling.
'Yeah, she did everything wrong, got nothing right.
She talked too much, made the boat rock constantly, tried to stand up in
the boat, baited the hook wrongly, used the wrong lures and worst of all
she caught more fish than me!' bellows Charlie.
Ten common fishing expressions
explained :
1) Catch and Release: This is a conservation term that happens right
before the local Fish and Game Protection Officer stops your boat when
you have caught over the limit.
2) Hook: (i) A small curved piece of metal used to catch
fish. (ii) A clever advertisement to entice a fisherman to spend his live
savings on a new rod and reel. (iii) The punch administered by said
fisherman's wife after he spends their life savings [see also, right
hook, left hook].
3) Line: Something you give your colleagues when they ask on
Monday how your fishing went over the weekend.
4) Lure: An object that is semi-enticing to fish, but will
drive an angler into such a frenzy that he will charge his credit card to
the limit before exiting the tackle shop.
5) Reel: A weighty object that causes a rod to sink quickly
when dropped overboard.
6) Rod: An attractively painted length of fibreglass that
keeps an angler from ever getting too close to a fish.
7) School: A grouping in which fish are taught to avoid your
$30 lures and hold out for bread instead.
8) Tackle: What your last catch did to you as you reeled him
in, but just before he wrestled free and jumped back overboard.
9) Tackle Box: A box shaped amazingly like your comprehensive
first aid kit. Only a tackle box contains many sharp objects, so that
when you reach in the wrong box blindly to get an elastoplasts [band
aid], you soon find that you need more than one.
10) Test: (i) The amount of strength a fishing line affords
an angler when fighting fish in a specific weight range. (ii) A measure
of your creativity in blaming 'that flippin' line' for once again losing
the fish.

Living Life in My
Service 'Sweet Spot'
It is difficult to know for
sure what prompted the haunting words written in the 1800's by the
iconic American writer and philosopher Henry Thoreau:
"The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is
called resignation is confirmed desperation; a stereotyped but
unconscious despair is concealed even under what are called the games
and amusements of mankind."
There are numerous reasons for human despair. In reality, countless
millions worldwide possess no true hope, from birth to the grave, of
changing their material state. Even in America, most are
facing economically challenged times. Many from our church
family, having lost primary occupations, seek now to find
whatever work they can to provide the basic necessities for their
families. It's a difficult and disappointing time, in this regard, for
many among us. That said, does social disappointment and
financial uncertainty doom us, as Christians, to a life of quiet
desperation and despondency? The apostle Paul would answer a
resounding 'No'. He assured Timothy that he had succeeded in
finding contentment in whatever state he was in - and that often meant
situations of material and social distress. Paul believed that
economic and social struggle held little true influence over the spiritual
plane if one maintained a solidly Biblical perspective on life.
Paul taught and demonstrated that the greatest spiritual victories are
often won in the most difficult times, temporally. How could that be?
It's because true joy and contentment comes in finding out why our
Creator put us on this little blue planet, and then being about that
purpose with reckless abandoned.
This fall, we are embarking on a foundational effort
at Mountain Bible called Intentional Servanthood.
This program offers anyone willing to participate the opportunity to
discover their unique, God-given purpose spoken of earlier. With
minimal effort and personal discipline, any Christian can learn
to function daily in their spiritual 'sweet spot' - regardless of the
discouragement of the material malady's surrounding us. How can you be
involved? First, join a Connection Group. Most of our
groups are beginning the fall teaching the 'IS' material.
For those unable to join a Connection Group for whatever reason, other
opportunities will be offered toward guiding as many as possible
through this important course. Keep your ears tuned in the coming
weeks. Don't miss your opportunity this fall to live your Christian
life at an entirely different level, toward greater personal fulfillment
and to the greater glory of God.

STUDENT
MINISTRIES
23
Thus says the LORD, "Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and
let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of
his riches; 24 but let him who boasts boast of this, that he
understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises loving
kindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these
things," declares the LORD Jeremiah 9:23-24 (NASB)
Paul refers to this
passage in his first letter to the Corinthians. I love the concept of
this instruction for many reasons, but for now I want to share just one
with you....
In
today's society, we find ourselves "boasting", or battling
and competing with others on so many levels. Whether it's for power,
fame, appointment, recognition, or for many other types of competition.
In the world, these things set people apart and against each other at
the same time. Unfortunately, there is too much of this in the Church
as well. Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, wanted to remind them
that God's ways are opposite of the world, and it is important that we
know that we aren't all the same. We may be different in stature or
gifting or talents, money, fame, or lifestyle. But instead of the
jealousy and competition that arises from this awareness, we need to
focus on the importance of one main thing we do have in common. You
see, the knowledge we have of Christ is something that should unify
Believers. As we all dig deeper and grow stronger in our relationship
with God through Christ, we have that in common, and that's something
worth boasting about. So let the differences go, they are what make us
a healthy body.Let's be proud of the similarity, that we serve and know
the one True and Living God!
Have
a great month and remember to "boast" of who you are in
Christ. (That's really what matters!)
Chris

CHILDREN's MINISTRY
Happy August to Everyone!!!! Right now
on Sunday mornings we are studying Daniel. I want
to say Thank you Thank you Thank you to all the Teachers and Shepards
in Children's Ministry! You are a true gift to all the families
of Mountain Bible!
This month I have been reading the book "Faith Begins at
Home" by Mark Holmen. Boy was I convicted! Each
week our family will do a devotion, we will pray each night but I
realized even more through this book my role in my childrens
faith.
Deuteronomy 6:6-7.... These commandments that I give you today are to
be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children.
Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along
the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
Challenge: Parents are you talking to your kids about
what they are learning on Sunday mornings? Are you encouraging
your kids to pray each day? Are you taking the time to pray with
your children? It is our job as parents to teach our children the
word and faith in Christ. I encourage all parents this week to
make sure you are doing what our Father in Heaven has instructed us to
do. Are we going to be perfect at it, no but to not do anything
would go against what God has commanded parents to do.
A couple of weeks ago I handed out Sunday morning an activity to
do with the family....The Family Misson Statement....if you haven't
done it I encourage all families to sit down with your children
and make a family crest that describes your family and what you are all
about! Have a blessed August and come see come changes
happening in Childrens Ministry!
