November 2010

 Pile of LaundryDear Joel,

If you missed the Festival of Booths Sunday night, you missed a great time!
It was the hope of our Children's Director, Mark Kile, to redeem this holiday from the evil influence in our community and turn it into an opportunity for family fun while giving our kids a safe alternative to hang out and get all the candy they could want!  Guess what....it happened!  Thanks to everyone who provided bags and bags of candy and over a thousand cupcakes!!!  And thanks to everyone who worked so hard creating and hosting a booth!    And thanks to the whole MBC church family who supported this effort in many different ways.  Ideas are already pouring in for next year in how to make this a community event, because obviously when Mountain Bible members get challenged they rise to it in grand fashion!  Speaking of fashion the costume contest winners were:  Benny Rodriguez (Laundry Basket), Mr. Ellis (Roman Soldier), Hunter Hoff (Fireman), Preston Miller (Hobo), Jewel Johnson (Fairy), Caden Cobb (Mummy), Abby Hazelo (Present), Lynell Seeley (Pippy Longstocking), Joey Clark (Clown), Amitee Hanewinckel (Fairy), Joey Davis (Dinosaur) and Best Family Johnson's as the cast of Alice and Wonderland. And a special award for best booth goes to Barry and Linda Lee Hoff for Goliath!!!  Think and plan now for Festival of Booths, 2011 Sunday night October 30th.

Pastor Jim and Tammy at Festival of Booths 2010 What does our future hold at MBC?

A pretty important question I would say.  There is an old adage that is always true: "If you shoot for nothing, you'll hit it every time".  What are we shooting for at Mountain Bible Church?  Do we have a vision?  A plan?  Do we believe God has some truly special things for us in the future?  How do we intentionally move toward what we believe He has called us to do?

Last Sunday night, I met with about eighty people from our MBC family and shared with them, in some detail, where I believed  God was taking us in the next  year to eighteen months as a ministry.  It was exhilarating for me to think about all the things that are already in place, and  others  we are presently embarking on toward reaching our vision for Christ here at Mountain Bible.  What is our vision?  What is our plan?  How does it all tie together?  To answer all of these questions, I'd like to encourage you to get and read a copy of the elder report that Jana  emailed to the church body this past week.  If you don't have e-mail access, hardcopies are available at the church office and at the weekend services.  Now go...boil up some steaming hot chocolate, sink into your favorite chair and  read deeply about what our future holds here at MBC.  I believe you'll be just as excited and encouraged as I am regarding God's present and future work here at Mountain Bible!

Special Thanksgiving Offering

For many years, Mountain Bible has collected a special offering at the end of November coinciding with the Thanksgiving holiday.  Each year, the elder board determines how the offering will be used to impact Christ's kingdom. This offering replaces our regular weekly offering and has been used for a variety of different purposes over the years such as expediting the payoff of our mortgage debt.  Consequently, MBC is presently debt free in regard to our facilities!  The offering has also been used for other special projects and outreach efforts at MBC and beyond.  Many local ministries outside of MBC have greatly benefitted through receiving significant gifts from this offering as well.  Please be in prayer as to how God would have you contribute to our Thanksgiving offering later this month.

Pastor Kraig and Pam Jones Festival of Booths 2010 Men's Breakfast

The series we are using this year is called the Game Plan for Life.  We had 72 men at the first session, which dealt with the topic "Who is the Coach?"  The second session addressed the topic of "The Ultimate Playbook" , and the third session on November 19 will look at "Freedom!" with Chuck Colson as the special guest.  This has been a great study and well worth the effort to get up a little early.  We start at 6:15 sharp and end at 7:30.  I look forward to studying with you in the coming months.  Pastor Kraig

Where did all the hot dogs go?Children & Family Ministry

As a parent myself, I enjoy reading different resources that help Johnna and me in our parenting.  One of my favorites is Parent Life.  I recently read an article in the November issue that I think will be helpful.  3 Dynamics of a Mission-Minded Family, by Ann Dunagan.  The main three points were as follows:

Dynamic #1 - A mission-minded family is focused on eternity.  Mission-minded families have a focused purpose for life.

Dynamic #2 - A mission-minded family lives in submission.  A mission-minded family is submitted.  There is total submission to God and His purposes.

Dynamic #3 - A mission-minded family is strategically aimed.  Each person in your family has specific gifts and callings, and you also have a destiny as a family.  God has placed you together as a powerful unit, so seek the Lord for His purpose for you as a team.

To read the rest of this article, you can find a copy of Parent Life in one of our Children's Classrooms in Building A, or ask Mark Kile or any Adventure Land teacher.

What an opportunity we have as parents.  God has entrusted us with His wonderful children!!!!!!!!!!!!

Christmas Tea 2009 Women's Ministry

Christmas Cards for The Troops:  You have the opportunity to bless the men and women who serve to protect our freedoms far away from home and family during the holidays...which can be a lonely time.  It's our privilege to let them know we are remembering and praying for them, with gratitude, as we send a Christmas Card with a word of encouragement.  Cards have been donated for that purpose.  You may pick up a box at the Women's Ministry Table, (or donate a box you've purchased) have your family sign them, add a word of encouragement and return them to the table by November 14th for timely shipping to the troops.  Do not add postage or seal them.

The Annual Women's Ministry Christmas Tea will be held Saturday, December 4th.  This year's theme is "An English Christmas".  Tickets are $10 and will go on sale SATURDAY, November 6th, from 10 a.m. - noon in Bldg. A.  Come enjoy refreshments and purchase your ticket.  Any remaining tickets (until sold out) will be available at the Women's Ministry Table on Sundays until November 21st.  Invite your neighbors and friends to this special event.

Volunteers are needed...for ONE day...on Monday, November 29th beginning at 8:30 a.m. until completed.  The more hands, the better.  Each year, MBC is beautifully decorated as we celebrate the true meaning of Christmas and honor the greatest gift ever given!   We need the strength of men to move trees & set them up for decorating, put up outside lights, and assist in many ways.  We need women to help decorate trees and the interior of both Buildings A & C.  Everyone's help will be appreciated.  The beauty of our campus sends a message of joy to all who pass by.  Join us to be a part of that message!  For more information, call Jana or Marilyn Pate at 472-7800 X140.

Hitting the Mark Student Ministry

Well, fall is upon us. And like the weather, we have seasons in our lives that change. I have learned in the past couple of years that trying to fight the change would be like trying to stop the seasons from changing. I firmly believe that allowing God to take us through the different seasons of our lives is the only way to grow and progress through life with some sort of sanity!

 Ecclesiastes 3 says....

1 There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

2 a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,

3 a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,

4 a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,

5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,

6 a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,

7 a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,

8 a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

9 What do workers gain from their toil? 10 I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yetno one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. 12 I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live.

Encouraging?.... Only if you trust HIM completely. Mathew Henry responds to this scripture this way...

"That every change concerning us, with the time and season of it, is unalterably fixed and determined by a supreme power; and we must take things as they come, for it is not in our power to change what is appointed for us."( Mathew Henry )

As you look around and watch your life change and find yourself challenged in a new way, I encourage you to "look up" and surrender to The One who is in control. Knowing that the Creator of the universe wants what is best for us, has brought my family and I through some pretty crazy "seasons" in our life. I encourage you to find some excitement and joy in the experience.

The wisdom from Solomon in vs. 12 .... 12 I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live.  I had a mentor in my life about 15 years ago that when asked "how are you?".. he would respond by saying," well, both feet hit the floor this morning ,it's gonna be a good day!" So celebrate change and celebrate life, we are alive and God loves us...embrace what comes your way ....and hang on!

Window Decal

Window Decals

On an important but lighter note, I'm challenging everyone this week to take five minutes and put your MBC window decal on your automobile.  If you've never received one, there are a few available in the church office as well as in the kiosk on Sundays.  Before the weather turns disagreeable, make sure you put this decal on your car.  What an attractive, yet effective way to get the name and mission of our church out to those in our surrounding community.

Jovial Jokes from Jana

Lynell Seeley as Pippy Longstocking

Twas the night of Thanksgiving,
but I just couldn't sleep...
I tried counting backwards,
I tried counting sheep.
The leftovers beckoned...the dark meat and white,
but I fought the temptation with all of my might.
Tossing and turning with anticipation,
the thought of a snack became infatuation.
So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door
and gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore.
I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
stuffing with gravy, green beans and tomatoes.
I felt myself swelling so plump and so round,
till all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.
I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky
with a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie
But, I managed to yell as I soared past the trees...
Happy eating to all -- pass the cranberries, please

If April showers bring May flowers what do May flowers bring?
Pilgrims!

Why did the turkey cross the road?
It was the chicken's day off.

Why do turkeys always go, "gobble, gobble"?
Because they never learned good table manners!

What sound does a space turkey make?
Hubble, hubble, hubble.

Why did the police arrest the turkey?
They suspected it of fowl play.

Why did the Indian chief wear so many feathers?
To keep his wigwam.

Why did they let the turkey join the band?
Because he had the drumsticks.
