How Important Is Your Neighbor?

Penny DeGroot

A few years ago the church got a call from a lady that attended occasionally to MBC.  She had been homebound and wanted someone to visit with her.  This gal, Pat, lived in my neighborhood and so I was asked if I could make contact with her.   In the back of my mind I was thinking - great, someone in my neighborhood that I could walk with, exercise with (possibly) - I jumped at the opportunity.  Well Pat had been diagnosed with a disease that affected her liver and most days she was only able to go from the bedroom to her easy chair.  I met with Pat and even attempted to do a bible study with her on the book of "Heaven".  I discovered that was not one of my gifts.  I invited Pat (and her daughter-n-law) to attend several events here at MBC.   During Thanksgiving I was able to take a box of food to her and her family and was given the opportunity to invite them to the Christmas Tea last December, (which they loved)  and most recently Pat came to the Priscilla Shirer Telecast.

Pat has had a tough couple of years.  She and her husband divorced and her daughter-n-law moved in to take care of Pat.  Last month I heard she was in the hospital.  I visited her several times and took one of my favorite books for her to read.  Last week I told my husband that I was sure she was out of the hospital and I needed to call and see how she was doing.  That night as I read the newspaper I read that Pat had passed on.  My heart was so sad.  As a believer, I know she is safe with Jesus and in a better place.  What I was sad about was that I thought I had more time to minister to my neighbor.  To be that friend.  So now the question to myself is - why am I waiting to get to know my neighbors, why is it so hard to "step outside that box"?  This is my struggle and I promise to work hard in this area of weakness.   If you have any "Pats" in your life - I hope you don't wait too long.  Your friend Penny.

Jovial Jokes

A man was terribly overweight, so his doctor put him on a diet.

"I want you to eat regularly for two days, then skip a day. Then eat regularly again for two days, then skip a day. Repeat this procedure for two weeks. The next time I see you, you should have lost at least five pounds."

When the man returned, he shocked the doctor by having lost nearly 60 pounds!

"Wow, that's amazing!" the doctor said. "Did you follow my instructions?"

The man nodded. "I'll tell you though, I thought I was going to drop dead on the third day."

"From the hunger, you mean?" asked the doctor.

"No, from the skipping."

Children's Ministry Leadership Transition

from Pastor Jim

Last April, Mark Kile approached me and let me know that he felt God leading him to resign his position as Children's Ministry DirectorMark Kile here at Mountain Bible.  Mark has served in the area of Children's Ministry for many years...first as a volunteer and then as director of the children's ministry at large.  I want to thank Mark publically for his vision and heart for our MBC children and families.  He has and continues to be an inspiration to me in this regard.  In the future, Mark will be focusing his attention on other areas of ministry here at Mountain Bible and beyond as God leads.  Please thank Mark for all of his dedicated work for our kids and families when you see him at church and around town in the weeks to come.

After a brief yet thorough search, I felt led to ask Felicia Moore to take over the position of Children's Ministry Director and she has voiced great excitement in the prospect of doing so.  Felicia is married to Brandon, and they and their five children have attended Mountain Bible since June of 2005 .  Felicia served as Children's Ministry Director for a temporary period of time a little over a year ago, so she has a unique perspective Felicia Moore Familyon where the ministry is and where she would like to see it go.  Felicia also possesses a strong skill set as a leader that, I believe, will make her very effective in this new role as we continue to develop our new children's ministry strategy here at Mountain Bible.  Please be in prayer for Felicia as she joins our ministry staff and prepares our Children's Ministry for even greater things in the future.

Pastor Kraig JonesThe Difference Series

from Pastor Kraig

Why answer the door when they come knocking?  That is the way I used to be many years ago.  I knew I was a Christian so why spend the time talking to those of another faith?  I remember clearly, one day that God impressed on my heart that they need to hear the truth too.  I died for them too.  So whenever I get a chance to share my faith and to give every man an answer that  I share.  Those coming to your door are not trying to deceive you they believe that they have the truth. I think that God wants to use you to share the gospel in any circumstance and there they are standing at your door.  It will take some study but you can be used by God to plant seeds of truth.  The Holy Spirit will then work, and God gets the increase.  I would like to invite you to take advantage of this series to better equip yourself for the ministry you have at your door.  Pastor Kraig

Marilyn Pate Women's Ministry

from Marilyn Pate Director of Women's Ministries

Ladies, more great opportunities await you for this summertime...school is out and perhaps a somewhat more relaxed schedule allows you to participate in "life-enriching" study and/or fellowship with other women.  Check out a few of your options below.

In addition to the two excellent Thursday morning Bible studies, we have added 3 evenings, which are one-time studies with no additional study book and no cost.    These Thursday evening studies would be a great time to invite your un-churched neighbor or friend.  Each week will have a different teacher and topic.    The list of all summer studies is as follows:

SUMMER BIBLE STUDIES:

  Thursday Mornings  9-11 a.m., Bldg C

June 9, 16, 23     "Kinsman Redeemer" Precept study (with Alana Wallace)

June 23-July 28"Fearless" Living...without Fear" Max Lucado (with Jan Chapek)

PLANNING AHEAD:

GIRL TIME GATHERING

"Exercise Your Soul" promises to be a fun-filled evening on August 25th 6-8:30 p.m.  More information available soon.

There are three opportunities in September (in addition to Bible study start-up) so you'll want to plan ahead.

We will host the BETH MOORE "Living Proof" SIMULCAST here at MBCon September 10th.  Tickets will be available later in July.

"CAMP ROUGH-IT" is tentatively scheduled for the last weekend in September.  Mark your calendar and watch for more information at the Women's Ministry table or call Erin Gibson @ 474-2535.  This is a time for gals to have fun and fellowship in the great outdoors.

The 2011 "WOMEN OF FAITH Over the Top" conference is also scheduled for September 23-24 in Phoenix at the US Airways Center.  The cost will be $89 or $99 including boxed lunch for both days.  The amount will be based on how many gals sign up.  Lodging is extra.  For a list of conference speakers for this event, go to www.womenoffaith.com  .   Penny DeGroot is taking reservations and answering questions for this event.   She can be reached mornings at the church office...472-7800.
