Get ready for the summer -
You know you're in Arizona when ...
*You no longer associate bridges (or rivers) with water.
*You eat hot chilies to cool your mouth off.
*You can make instant sun tea.
*You learn that a seat belt makes a pretty good branding iron.
*You discover that in July, it takes only 2 fingers to drive your
car.
*You discover that you can get a sunburn through your car window.
*You notice the best parking place is determined by shade instead of
distance.
*Hot water now comes out of both taps.
*You actually burn your hand opening the car door.
Also in Arizona:
· Hunting camels is prohibited.
· Any misdemeanor committed while wearing a red mask is
considered a felony. This goes back in the days of the Wild West.
· There is a possible 25 years in prison for cutting down a
cactus.
· Donkeys cannot sleep in bathtubs.
· It is unlawful to refuse a person a glass of water.

Summer Slump?
Summer is coming! Kids across
Payson are getting antsy, squirming in well worn school chairs even
more than normal. Teachers are lingering a bit longer in the
teachers' lounge, debating whether or not they'll survive the final
few class periods. Parents are frantically combing their
calendars, wondering what their children will find to do the next
couple of months. Churches are winding programs down as the
ministry year comes to an end. Pastors are taking second and
third looks at the budget sheets, anticipating the dreaded 'summer
slump' as parishioners vacate the area in search of swashbuckling
adventure.
After pastoring for nearly twenty years, I've experienced the
fore-mentioned cycle time and time again: Where did all the
people go! When will they come back - or will they? Will
they lose sight of our vision... forgetting the ministry we've
labored together on all year...oblivious to our strategic summer
planning toward a fruitful fall Kick-off? Possibly more than
any other, this question haunts the subconscious of the typical
senior pastor: Will we survive the dreaded 'summer slump'?
I wonder if the premier pastor of all Christian history
concerned himself with such things. Though I know he was a mere
human, somehow I doubt it. He, in fact, clearly communicated
just the opposite: "Be anxious for nothing...but in everything,
pray...give thanks" (Phil. 4:6ff). Even for a summer slump
financially? I suppose so, if God sees fit to allow it. In
reality, worrying about summer slumps or anything of the sort speaks
poorly of God's ability and even worse of our faith.
As for me, twenty years in full time ministry have taught me to trust
God and believe in people. In the most dire financial
circumstances imaginable, I've witnessed God come through in ways
nothing short of miraculous. I often seen summer generosity
increase instead of the expected opposite. I've recognized
God's sovereign control over things indirectly determined outside His
reach. I've learned valuable and encouraging lessons. God
is not limited by summer slumps.
What is the moral of my short story to our Mountain Bible family?
Have a great summer! Enjoy your friends and family. See
new and beautiful places. Dangle your feet in cool water,
baiting your hook only if you must. Breathe deeply of sweet
pine air. But in your well deserved absence, remain financially
faithful to the church that you love, anticipating along with me some
God-sized happenings come this fall!

Women's Summer Studies
going on!!!
About 60 women enjoyed the first series "PRESS PAUSE FOR
GRACE" in the NEW Women's Summer Bible Studies
that ended last week. Be sure to join us for the 2nd series
beginning June 17th extending weekly through July 8th. This is
a great time to refresh, relax, be blessed by the study and then
enjoy some very practical skill demonstrations and information to
"take home" and put to use in your family. It's great
fun and encouragement for your summer months! The series cost
is $10, no homework, and each week's session stands on its own so if
you must miss a week, you'll not be behind...just come the nextJ!
The Prayer
Garden is a work in process. Several of our
gals have been making this a very special place for peace and
tranquility among God's creation. If you would enjoy a walk
through the garden, a few minutes on a bench listening to the birds
and communing with God...the garden is open and available for your
enjoyment any day, all day.
The Gardeners would welcome donations of benches (or $$ for purchase
of benches), perhaps in memory of a loved one, or scripture rocks and
bird houses to add to the garden. If you have something to
give, they will find the perfect place to put it within their garden
landscape plan. Please call Martha Teubner (951-3251)for more
information. New volunteers would be welcome, too.

Student Ministries
WOW... has it really been a month since I wrote the
last newsletter ? May came and went fast ( and so did the school
year). Ponder this.....by the time you read the next
newsletter, we will be halfway through summer !
Here's our schedule for June...
56 of us leave on the 6th for Jr. High camp. As a group of churches,
we have maxed out the camp with over 560 students and counselors.
This year's theme is "CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE".
Please be praying for our students at camp as they receive
encouragement and Biblical Truths regarding their walk with God. I
already have a copy of the speakers outline and I am so excited about
this year's topic ! We will return on the 11th, spiritually
rejuvenated and physically exhausted... (that is a sure sign
that camp was a success). I'm pretty sure I will be giving a
report in the "BIG HOUSE " on the 13th.
There will not be LIVEWIRE meeting on the 9th for Jr. High.
But wait ! there's more .....
High School campers leave on the 20th for their camp. Believe it or
not, this will be a great time for Dani and I to unwind from a fast
paced Jr. High camp. High School camp is structured around personal
growth and responsibility as a child of God. The students have a lot
more free time for reflection and study. The focus of the speaker and
seminars promise to be a great time of learning for our High School
students and there will definitely be lives and hearts changed and
re-focused! Please also be praying for our HS students to be open to
new direction and growth that God might bring their way as they
mature. By the time you see me on the 23rd for another camp
report, I should definitely be sporting that California tan ! (kind
of like the one Pastor Jim.... HAD). There will not be High
School IMPACT on Tuesday the 22nd.
Have a great June.... Happy Father's Day to all for which it applies
!
Chris
